Openwave Systems Inc. , the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the communications industry today announced that over 20 operators, including Bell Mobility, Cincinnati Bell, DNA Communications, Telefonica and Telstra, have committed to deploy Openwave(TM) Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) Version 6, an integrated gateway for both WAP 1 and WAP 2 devices, to support their WAP 2 services.
With 40 billion WAP 2 transactions and over 300 billion WAP 1 transactions completed to date, Openwave MAG is the most proven, interoperable and standards-compliant WAP gateway supporting the new WAP 2 handsets entering the market. Openwave MAG already is part of the core infrastructure at more than 70 Communication Service Providers representing more than 70 million WAP users all over the world.
"With WAP 2, WAP moves beyond browsing and becomes an enabling technology for applications such as MMS and downloads. As a result, Openwave MAG 6, a WAP 2 gateway, is able to provide a central control point for the operator and improve the overall user experience," said David Hose, vice president and general manager, infrastructure group for Openwave. "In addition, with WAP 2 supporting the Internet transport protocols, MAG 6 allows operators to go beyond mobile handsets and support multiple devices in the network-extending the overall value of their WAP gateway."
MAG 6 increases the addressable market for operators by optimizing content delivery, the forwarding of device capabilities to content providers and the translation between different markup and image formats. It also allows the operator to manage subscriber identity and enforce business policy on a network level by dividing subscribers into different groups and applying access control, billing and routing rules.
Two additional and widely anticipated features of WAP 2 are support for the XHTML markup language and end-to-end security. The XHTML markup language gives content providers considerably better control over the layout of the content on the phone screen and allows them to use features such as buttons, tables, background color and input boxes. The result is web pages for phones that look more like small, colorful versions of Internet sites. The support for end-to-end security allows for the development of secure banking, enterprise and m-commerce applications.
